The Rear Wishbones

NOTE: The left and right Upper Wishbones and Internal Supports should come bagged together and these bags are marked ‘L’ and ‘R’.

Step 1

Slide the post of the left Internal Support into this matching hole of the left Upper Wishbone, as shown:

You will know these are the correct parts of these ‘bolts’ of the Upper Wishbone and the hole in the Internal Support are both facing up:

Step 2

Retrieve your Rear Frame assembly from the previous stage and place it upside down on your work surface. Turn your Upper Wishbone assembly upside down as well, then fit the Internal Support into this location on the left side of the Rear Frame assembly, as shown:

Secure the Internal Support to the Rear Frame from the other side with one (1) Type B screw:

Step 3

Fit the left Rear Arm Bracket to this matching left-side location on the Rear Frame assembly.

The two Rear Arm Brackets are not marked left and right, but only one will fit correctly at this point in the stage. Note how the Rear Arm Brackets have a trapezoidal recess on the bottom. This matches up to a trapezoidal raised section on the left Rear Frame assembly:

When the left Rear Arm Bracket is fitted to this location, it should line up to the free end of the left Upper Wishbone, as shown:

Secure this Rear Arm Bracket to the Rear Frame using one (1) Type A screw.

This is your friendly reminder to try using 3-in-One Oil on all screws going into metal:

Finally, align the free end of the Upper Wishbone with the Rear Arm Bracket and secure them together with one (1) Type G screw, as shown:

Step 4

In the same way on the opposite side, slide the post of the right Internal Support into the matching hole of the right Upper Wishbone. Then, fit the Internal Support into this location on the right side of the Rear Frame assembly, as shown:

Secure the Internal Support to the Rear Frame from the other side with one (1) Type B screw:

Step 5

As before, fit the remaining right Rear Arm Bracket to this matching right-side location on the Rear Frame assembly. Secure the Rear Arm Bracket to the Rear Frame with one (1) Type A screw (red arrow below). Then, align the Upper Wishbone and secure it to the Arm with one (1) Type G screw (yellow arrow below):

Thoughts

It is hard to believe, but the first car with independent rear suspension was the 1961 Jaguar XKE. This Miura was created only a few years later, but it quickly adopted this high performing design. We will complete the left rear suspension in the next stage.
